Facebook the new uber dating site?

Since it’s early beginnings at Harvard University, Facebook has always been a ‘hook up’ site. College students could go to a party, then search for the person they met. In fact, the original difference between Myspace.com, hotornot.com and the other early comers to the social media scene was that you could display your social status with Facebook. I’m single, looking, not looking, in a relationship, engaged, married, whatever.

I’ve heard of so many people finding ‘true love’ on Facebook, from only from friends, but old lost loves finding each other and hooking up.

One of the serious problems dating sites have is safety. You might get to know the person via email, phone calls, then meet up with them. Chances are if your warning antennas haven’t gone up by then, you’ll have a good date. But it’s a ‘roll the dice’ thing, as you don’t have any other relationship connections with that person.

With Facebook, you know people because of their connection to you. You have to invite them to be a part of your life. You can see their friends and whom they’re connected to. So there’s a much larger picture to the person than the photoshopped ‘hottie’ image you’re getting on the dating site.

With so many people on Facebook, why wouldn’t you use it to ‘screen’ people first? In fact, one way I screen people is to piece together enough information from their profile on the dating site, search online for them, then find them on Facebook. I wouldn’t contact them through Facebook, but at least I got a good idea about the type of person they were and if they were compatible.

Facebook is a very interesting social phenomenon, and is changing the way we interact with each other. If you don’t have a Facebook account, probably good to get one. Might change your life.

Site Review: Age Match

This is a matchmaking site that specializes in the May-December romance. They refer to this niche as the “age gap relationship.” The “age gap relationship” is hardly a new thing and it is not a rare coupling. We see it a lot in this day and age.

After doing some casual clicking on this site, I was very excited to see that in their Help/FAQ section they actually list the pricing of the Gold Membership. ALL matchmaking sites should make their prices available BEFORE a person becomes a member.

Signing up for the site will take you a few minutes. It’s not really tedious, though. The requirements are only meant to enrich your experience as a user and to ensure that your matches will be what you’re looking for.

Even though I was giddy from the fact that this site lists it’s prices to non-members, I have to admit that this site is a teeny bit pricey. Of course, where you money goes is entirely up to you. Pricing for the Gold Membership breaks down as follows:

1 Month- $29.95

3 Months- $59.95

6 Months- $95.95

12 Months- $143.95

You can earn a free Gold Membership for small amounts of time by working with the site on networking, stopping scammers, blogging, inviting friends, and sharing tips. While this is a neat perk, it makes me question the competence of the administrators. I mean, this place charges a pretty penny for a Gold Membership but they will give you small tastes of Gold for basically doing their jobs. It’s odd.

The bright sit to this is that you are able to do basic member searches and receive emails and instant messages from other members. It’s still a really restrictive membership, but you can still at least search.

One really neat feature this this site offer is a place for age gap blogs. If you’re interested in reading or starting an age gap blog, this would be a good place to look.

In the end, I’m kind of lukewarm about this site. It’s not exciting. It does, however, offer a niche experience that some might find worth the money. It’s your choice, but choose wisely. You can do better.

50YearsPlus.com is a matchmaking site for Senior citizens. Their motto is: “A singles site for Seniors with Integrity.”

If you click on the “About Us” tab on the left side bar, you are given the impression that the administrators of this site are a married couple that met through an online matchmaking site. While that is a romantic notion, there is no proof of the validity of that claim. There isn’t even picture of the happy couple.

Under the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) tab, there are several simple questions answered that will be very useful to some of the Seniors out there who still find computers and the internet a bit perplexing. I find this all very reassuring. Also (and this makes me so excited since I complain about it in several site reviews) they provide pricing for their Premium Membership on this page. That means that potential users can view the pricing of that package BEFORE actually signing up for the site.

This site also contains some very neat features that could make the user experience very enjoyable. It goes very much beyond the simple profile search that so many dating sites use as their entirity. You want these features, trust me.

Signing up for the site is very fast and very easy. This, I’m sure, is to cater to the users who are not internet-savvy. For those who are internet-savvy, this quick process will be welcome.

I found the pricing breakdown confusing in that they made it a little difficult to divine that the basic membership is, in fact, free. Right now the site has a special pricing offer for the Premium Membership where a 6 month membership costs only $29.95. Regular Premium Membership pricing is as follows:

-1 Month is $12.95

-3 Months are $24.95

-6 Months are $44.95

-1 Year is $74.95

These prices are very comparable to other matchmaking sites. The real question is whether or not this site is worth your money. Yes. It is.

Senior Citizens, Don’t Be Afraid to Get Out There!

When you look at dating sites and the whole dating scene these days all you see are fresh, young faces and “sexy” people. Now while we all know that not everybody on these sites looks like the models shown on the front pages, we also tend to forget about a certain demographic that needs some special attention in the dating scene. The Senior Citizens.

I sincerely hope that the mentality towards Senior dating has changed from when my grandmother was alive. When she hit 50 as a single woman, she closed up shop and assumed that her days as a partner to another human being were over. She spent her time reading cheesy romance novels to fill that part of her and it made me so sad for her. If only she had lived long enough to see the rise of the internet matchmaking site she might have had a different perspective on her status as a woman and a viable adult.

Besides talks of Viagra, there is surprisingly little on the internet in the way of the Senior dating scene. Seniors seem to be the forgotten demographic…or they are expected to prey on the younger generations. While the May-December relationship is not something we look down upon, Seniors should have better options where dating within their age group is concerned.

While we like to encourage you datesters out there to utilize the internet to aid you in your matchmaking needs, in the end our main goal is to get you guys out there in the dating world. Sometimes, there are days and occasions when going to a physical location and mingling might be extremely beneficial to you. St. Patrick’s Day is one of those occasions.

Every body is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. Everybody drinks green beer, Guinness, or loads of Irish whiskey to celebrate the Emerald Isle. Because of the celebratory imbibing of the Irish Liquid Confidence, this day might be an opportune time to get out to the party scene and have a good time. Not only for the sake of meeting people, but just to let loose and have a good time. We Irish know how to let loose.

People will be happy. People will be looking to have a good time. Flirtation is usually a big part of these good times. Every year I hear a new story from a single friend about the awesome people about town on St. Patrick’s Day.

Relax. Go out looking to have fun and party a little. Don’t go out on a mission to hook up or find the love of your life. If you’re relaxed, you will be more attractive. Drink some of that green beer, have some lamb stew, listen to some Thin Lizzy (an Irish rock band for you kids out there), and have a great time. If you meet someone, consider it a perk.
