Why does it feel like an interview?

You put a lot of thought into the outfit. You want to look your best. You mentally rehearse the situation so you look cool and prepared. You want your best qualities to shine and your weaknesses to take a back seat. You want to appear smart and interesting. It’s very important to you that this event goes well.

I’ve just described the way a person might feel before a job interview AND a first date. Both occasions call for a great first impression. We need to appear as the absolute best versions of ourselves because we’d like to have that follow-up, be it a second interview or a second date. It’s all business.

An experienced dater knows that on a first date, they are talking not to their date, but to their date’s representative. Because the whole dating scene has so much inventory, it is important to portray yourself as a valuable asset in the market. What do you have that makes you unique? What do you have to offer to this potential relationship?

Alas, we all slip. We all have a momentary brain fart where that first date is more comparable to a job interview at McDonald’s rather than at a large and respectable place of business. We drink too much, tell a sob story about how our ex threw our stuff in the yard and let their dog pee all over it and then give a foot job under the dinner table. You know your friends and they know you. They know that you hate U2 and you know that they have crazy parents. The whole “getting to know you” period happened with ease and with no underlying intentions. You can sit next to your friend on a couch and not constantly wonder if hand-holding or touching is appropriate. And, for some, the best thing of all is that you can burp and fart in front of your friends. That means a lot to those of us that have been on dates that included beer and nachos.

I believe that two people who are attracted to one another cannot be friends without at least entertaining the possibility of hooking up. All of that spending time together and talking only seems to build the attraction. I know from experience, people. I used to be serial about having friendships that contained a lot of sexual tension. I’m sick like that.

One of these friends especially starred in many dirty fantasies. He was funny, smart and very sexy. We would talk on the phone every night, just bullshitting about nothing. He would talk about how boring his girlfriends were and I would make him laugh. There was a huge physical attraction between us. We talked about hooking up all the time.

“You know how great it would be, ” he’d say to me. In the end, however, we decided that our friendship was great as it was. We knew that bringing sex into the mix would mess everything up and we would never be able to get back to where we were. I still wonder sometimes, though. It would have been great.

I really prefer dating strangers. It’s exciting. You get a new face, and new voice, a new personality. The series of “firsts” aren’t always bad either. First kiss. First touch. Firsts are awesome. You know how your old shoes are comfortable and reliable but that snazzy new pair, although uncomfortable, excite you and make you smile? That’s “new”. “New” feels good. “New” excites and arouses you twice as fast as “old and broken in” might. When that new person calls, you get nervous. When they touch you, your skin tingles. “New” is a good experience. It’s a short time of excitement and happiness, before all the serious heavy stuff comes into the mix (an unfortunate, but necessary part of dating). But what do I know? Although I went through my fair share of exciting strangers, I ended up marrying one of my good friends from high school.

I had just gotten out of a bad relationship and wasn’t really into the dating scene, but when a guy I’ll call “Craig” asked me out as a friend, I really didn’t see the harm in any of it. I had been single for about three months and was sick of being at home by myself, so to hang out with someone sounded pretty good.

We planned on meeting that Friday evening and going out to a movie and getting something to eat. When Friday came, the plans had changed a bit without my knowing. “Craig” came over to my house to pick me up and when I first got into his car, he turned the stereo up REALLY loud…I guess to impress me with the system that he had in his Ford Focus. I swear by the time we got around the block my ears were ringing, and all the while he was trying to talk to me and all I could see were his lips moving. Whatever he was saying I was agreeing with, “Uh huh.” Sometimes I think that I am too nice and instead of trying to yell “TURN IT DOWN,” I started to look out of the window until he got the hint that I couldn’t hear a word that he was saying. He finally decided to turn it down to get my attention.

I guess that I had agreed to go to his friend’s house with him. I also had apparently agreed to, instead of going out to dinner and a movie, a rented movie and take-out dinner at his place. His friends were really nice and after about an hour or so there we left, got food and went back to his place. At this time I was thinking that I should have driven myself. I don’t like to put myself in situations that I can’t just leave when I want to.

We ate and talked and he seemed like a nice enough guy. We had some things in common, but I didn’t think that we really clicked. He kept going on about how tall I am and wondered exactly how tall. I told him that I am 5’9″ and he argued that I wasn’t 5’9″ because he was 5’9″ and I was a lot taller that he was. It’s true that I was a lot taller, but I am 5’9″ and he was probably 5’5″ but he swore that I was at least 6′ because he WAS 5’9″.

We still had to watch a movie since I had agreed to it earlier on when I was at risk of going deaf, so I started thinking that I only had two hours left until I could go home. Just sit, watch the movie, then ask for a ride home. Hurry up. I hoped it was a good movie so that the time would fly by. Here is where it started getting freaking weird.

“Craig” started the movie. We were about 20 minutes into watching “National Treasure” (yeah, I was screwed in the good movie department) and he tells me that he feels “so comfortable around me” like he’s “known me for a long time” and he took his shirt off. Okay, Okay. I know it was just his shirt. That part didn’t bother me. His gut that hung out bothered me, but it’s not that odd for a guy to take his shirt off so I didn’t freak out just yet. About 10 minutes later he was still gong on about how he felt like we got along so well, and I was looking at him as if his head was getting ready to explode, but I said things like,

“Yeah I agree we get along, but this is a first date and we should just watch the movie.”

I was trying really hard to be nice and not laugh in his face, but then he did something that I couldn’t help but laugh at, yet at the same time feel VERY uncomfortable. He got up and took his pants off. Yes, he took his pants off. It was freaking odd, but at least he was wearing underwear. The bad part was that they were bikini underwear! A big gut and bikini underwear are not the sexiest combination. Being covered in hair isn’t sexy either. He was furry and in bikini underwear. He looked like an Oompa Loompa, you know, from Willy Wonka.

He was still going on about how comfortable he was around me. Maybe he couldn’t tell by the look of shock on my face that I was very uncomfortable. He went down his hallway after stripping down and I was trying to think fast on how the hell to get out of there. All I could come up with was that I was sick. To my surprise, when he came back to the room and I told him this, he got dressed and took me home.

The ride home was full of him telling me that he wanted to go on another date and how cool I was and how laid back I was (probably because I didn’t talk a lot in fear that the underwear were going to be removed). When we pulled up in front of my house, he asked me out again. I didn’t say “no way in hell,” but instead opted for the nicer version and said that I just wasn’t ready to date yet. When my roommate got home, we had a good laugh about my eventful evening and how I know how to pick the good ones.

Sex on the first date lead to trouble?

“He won’t respect me tomorrow.”

“I’m such a slut.”

“I’m so glad I didn’t wait until the fourth date for that.”

It’s a personal choice to either hold off or to have sex on the first date. If you get caught up in the moment and “OOPS” you just sort of boinked your dates, don’t be ashamed. There’s nothing wrong at all with getting caught up in the moment. However, if you find yourself having more first dates with sex and less second dates, you might want to rethink your dating strategy. Unless you are casually dating and having fun, it might not be a bad idea to use this wonderful thing some of us like to call, “better judgment.” If your ultimate goal in dating is to have a lasting relationship, think before diving head first into your date’s lap.

Let’s say you met your date on an online dating site and have been talking ot them via electronic messaging and phone for a while. When the time finally comes for the two of you to meet face to face and your date is amazing and you feel a definite physical connection, don’t be afraid to act on your impulses. More people need to be spontaneous like that. If you aren’t ready to take the relationship to the sexual level, then hold off. But please, please PLEASE don’t use sex as a way to manipulate your date.

Don’t hold off for the main purpose to keep them interested in you. If they are genuinely interested in you on the first date, the odds are good that they will stay interested…sex or no sex. If they don’t like you and you put out, they’re still not going to like you. You just became a notch on their belt.

If you’re happy with your life at the moment and you’re dating simply to meet people and have fun then by all means, go at it at your own discretion. PLEASE be smart about it and use protection. Just because you’re having fun doesn’t mean you should jeopardize your health and lifestyle for what most likely will only be a 15 minute roll in the hay.

We live in a sexually open society in sexually open times. Enjoy yourselves. Get your freak on if your mood so inclines. Just think and use protection.
