Holiday Dating and Kissing Under the Mistletoe

mistletoeHoliday season dating is always a special time to really show your date a great time, be extra romantic, or just spend an extra couple minutes underneath the mistletoe.

Believe it or not, the custom of having the obligation of kissing when caught under the mistletoe came from Scandinavia. It is the plant of peace, and the story goes that if enemies met by chance in the forest where there was mistletoe in the canopy overhead, they would lay down their arms and maintain a truce until the next day. Not sure if this applies to dating, as I’m not sure I want to fight the next day.

Mistletoe also has pagan rituals attached to it, one of them being that the fruit’s content (viscin) is very similar or suggestive to human semen. Go figure, unless you’re using it to get pregnant.

I like the Romanian definition the best, in which Mistletoe is considered a source of good fortune. If I ever wound up with a beautiful date under the mistletoe, then good fortune had been bestowed upon me. This definition seems to be the best fit, along with the tradition to keep it off the floor and leave it hanging until the next Christmas eve to ward off house fires and lightening strikes. Actually, in my experience, the house should have caught ablaze after those sizzling kissing sessions under the mistletoe.

Having mistletoe around during the dating season also brings a spark of good cheer, a sense of excitement and a rush of hormones. Nothing better. If you remember yourself as an American kid on the edge of puberty, you’ll delight in the memories of your lions stirring at the chance to get that cute guy or gal under the mistletoe to get your chance.

So go out right now and get some mistletoe. You never know, you might have good fortune this year in dating.
