First Kisses Can Be Terrible

It was a great date. You definitely like your date and are interested in seeing them again. The time comes to part ways. You know it’s coming…..the first kiss. *cue cheesy horror music*

It has been my experience that the first kiss is almost always awkward, uncomfortable, and very laughable. I’ve had a tongue shoved into my mouth so hard that I nearly gagged, my lips licked instead of kissed, chicken peck kissed, and I’ve even had my date miss my mouth entirely and lay a slobbery smooch on my nose. It’s rare for a first kiss to be that powerful thing that we so often see on television. When alone after that first kiss, I would think back on it and laugh at myself. It wasn’t always my date that fumbled the kiss. I once made the mistake of going for that first kiss with my eyes open and the sight of my date’s face an inch away from mine, eyes closed and mouth agape, sent me into uncontrollable giggles.

Yes, the majority of the first kisses that I’ve experienced were embarrassing and bad. I’ve had a couple good ones and one really good one. That really good one still makes me smile, almost eight years after it happened.

I was 17 and he was 21. We weren’t dating. We were only friends. We were at a friend’s house hanging out and talking when he asked me to talk alone with him in the next room. Once we were alone, he pinned me in the doorway and kissed me…quite unexpectedly. Maybe it was the surprise of the kiss, or the fluidity of its execution, or even still the passion of it but my knees went weak. His hands were all over me and there was a way in which his mouth closed over mine that was very dominating. It was sexy.

There was never a relationship between us. In the world of men, he was not exactly a prized specimen. That just goes to show you that the first kiss is in no way indicative of how the relationship will turn out. When my husband and I first kissed, it was “meh” at best. A kiss is only a kiss. The fact that the first ones are usually bad only means that practice is in order. Practice is always lots of fun.
